Hair growth : Prescription and Surgical Treatments

Hair growth : Prescription and Surgical Treatments

For those who are at risk of severe hair loss, there are medical treatment options that can be availed.
One option for treating alopecia areata is by getting corticosteroid injections from a dermatologist. Reports show that patients generally notice hair growth about 30 days after the injections.

The oral medication Propecia or finasteride shows successful hair regrowth among men because it inhibits DHT. Pregnant women are prohibited from taking this drug, though, as it is shown to cause birth defects.

The more expensive options would be hair transplants and scalp rotation. In a hair transplant, the doctor will remove plugs of hair from parts of the scalp that still have volume, and then surgically transplant these into the bald patches. Another type of transplant for hair loss is follicular transplant, wherein the doctor removes individual hair follicles and transfers them to the bald patches.

Scalp rotation is an even more invasive form of treatment. The surgeon would surgically remove a patch of scalp with healthy hair growth as well as the patch of the scalp that is experiencing hair loss. The former patch would then be stitched onto the bald area. Children with hair loss problems are better candidates for this treatment as adult patients typically have failed results.

Scientific research behind hair loss is still in its infant stages, possibly because hair loss in itself does not affect the health of a person unless it has to do with one’s self-esteem. Be careful not to fall for promises of hair loss treatments that are not backed up by evidence. Instead, treat your body well by nourishing it with the right nutrients, managing stress, and using safe and organic products on your scalp and hair.

Do not hesitate to consult a professional so that you will know what form of treatment will help you reduce the amount of hair loss. If all else fails, do not let hair loss dampen your spirits. There is a lot more to life than just a full head of hair.
